Caption: So........National Steel Car has been building coil cars for the NS. They are brought down to St. Catharines where Steelcon is constructing the lids, or domes, rather, and they are being applied here at the plant just off Eastchester.
In this view 1859 has just brought more cars to be 'domed' and have pushed back to connect with the finished product inside the compound. Then 1859 brought the whole works out and backed the train across Eastchester on their main line and left the domed cars there, then pushing the new cars back into the compound where the next lot of domes will be applied and so the process repeats when the next lot from NSC comes in.
Finally, some entertainment on the North End. :o) I do not know how many cars NS has ordered.
I was surprised to see the 1859 working. Expected to see the red JLCX 3502, but I understand it has now gone off lease to GIO.

Very nice picture, sunshine, blue sky and some good old Alco smoke ! Good to see the 1859 still working, it certainly has the power to drag 18 cars. Much appreciate update of what is happening at Steelcon, whether more coil cars are arriving, and the status of 1859. Thanks for posting, John

Arnold, great photo. I saw a cut of these NS coil cars without hoods heading east on the Halton Sub. last Thursday on a 570. I had heard they were getting outfitted with hoods at St. Catherines so now I know where.

OK Arnold, just exactly where are you when you took this picture ? What is the name of the.street to the right of 1859? Was trying to determine your location by looking at Google maps but not sure of your exact location, John
Arnold …not to be a stickler, but TRENERGY is building the hoods for NSC…the building was sold to STEELCON a few years back but TRENERGY still leases 100,000 sqft in the main high bay section. About 8 years back TRENERGY was building tanks for NSC tank cars at the same site but in the low bay…the TRENERGY name was recently removed from the east end of the high bay and replaced with the STEELCON sign….the facility was originally FOSTER WHEELER and dates from the early 1900’s…nice shot

Klaucker: Well, geez!!!! Not being familiar with the ever-changing industrial scene in old St. Kitts I noted the huge “Steelcon” sign facing the street on the right and thought, “Thats good enough for me”!!! So I stand corrected. I thank you for this.

Klaucker is right. Trenergy is in fact manufacturing the hoods.
Does anyone know if the coil cars at Steelcon are on the move again ? Read yesterday a report that the NSC coil cars have been cleared of any blame regarding a derailment on NS.
Coal cars spotted on 422 this weekend, John. About 7 of them. They’re moving again.
Definitely on the move again. 16 new NS coil cars with lids on the tail end of A422 this morning at Mile 44.7 Halton Sub..
GIO really knew how to go out on the north end with a bang eh. All that extra traffic then… well… not worth it – let’s get out.
I never did shoot this move up there since they started it so much earlier. I did get the cars on the return trips though..
