Any idea as to the origins of the name the pocket? I’d heard it in my travels and was curious.
I’ve always been under the impression it’s a football reference to the way the crossovers are setup for crews to get from the New Yard across the mainlines to service the elevators. Just like a quarterback taking the snap and staying in “the pocket” to make a throw to one of their receivers, a yard crew will line themselves westward out of the New Yard onto the North Main (like the QB taking the snap) before shoving eastward through the rest of the crossovers, across the mainlines to service the elevators (the throw to the receiver).
