CN 5580, 9105, and 5568 at rest in Brandon in 1984. The 9105 was built as the 9056, and was the second last F7Au remanufactured in 1974. Twenty years later she was converted to this "B unit" configuration, remaining in service until 1989. The GP38-2Ws would be renumbered to the 4700-series in 1988 to free up the 5500s for new SD60Fs.

  2. I’ll take a stab at it. :-)
    For a similar reason as to why the CP painted over SD40 windows. The cab interiors were getting worn out and with a unit still in good mechanical condition, paint the windows over and back out on the road she goes. Railroads love cheap fixes. :-) There is also the added bonus for f units. For the brakeman, getting on/off or in/out of them, especially on a wayfreight, was not fun. It’s up and down that ladder how many times, I’d sooner be entraining the GP38′s. Because they gave these B units a larger fuel tank, I thought they might not be retired with the rest of the fleet. Nope, they all went.
