Today lesson is “How not to apply identification markings on a locomotive”. Sitting in Brantford Yard, CN 4906 with freehand identification markings is coupled to the more appropriately identified GTW 6425. Time to take away the crayons and order some pre-cut vinyl CN and number 4-9-0-6 decals.

    (a) The letter “F” shall be legibly shown on each side of every locomotive near the end which for identification purposes will be known as the front end.

    (b) The locomotive number shall be displayed in clearly legible numbers on each side of each locomotive.

    The hand drawn numbering method could make it difficult to “positively identify” the designated engine when a train has been restricted by an OCS Clearance or other operating authority.
