A similar photo could have easily been taken in the flatlands of Indiana and Ohio where the Nickle Plate once ran, but this is Ontario and on the CP Windsor Subdivision. With "heads up" in the wee hours of the morning it was noted that Norfolk Southern ES44AC #8100, the Nickle Plate Road Heritage Unit, was leading an empty autorack train #234 out of Elkhart, IN just before midnight. As luck would have it congestion on the NS in Detroit delayed the train enough to allow the sun to come up and swing around to result in a great shot of the train as it approached Sinclair Road in Jeanette, which is just east of Tilbury, Ontario. The scene looks like what I can imagine as a modern version of Tony Koester's HO scale NKP layout.

  1. One of my favorite heritage units-nice shot !

  2. Perfect shot of a great catch. Well done Geoff.

  3. Rare catch. Thanks to CP 234 grabbing whatever out of Chicago, you’re all treated to goodies like this, especially in the Windsor area! Next, it will be one of 5+ engines on a combined 234 out of Wolverton.

  4. Great picture Geoff, and yes it could be flat lands of Ohio instead of the “Chatham flats” (as my Dad used to call this area). Nicely composed and a nice break from usual CP red. The original NKP paint scheme was striking and it is nice to still see it today. Thanks for posting , John
