Great capture ! Are those gauntlet tracks over the bridge ?
They are not. Just an equilateral turnout
Thanks. I think there are a few similar examples on the Halton. Always wondered if they were gauntlets.
I believe all the single to double main track on the halton between Speyside and Ash are equilateral
There are indeed jordan rails (gauntlet) on the bridge at Stewarttown. No not all the switches between Ash and Stewarttown are equilateral turnouts.
@ngineered4u: Interesting. I thought Jordan rails were lengths of rail laid between the tracks to act as a guard to prevent derailments from falling of a bridge (?)
@Aitch..yes sir that is true. They are usually laid in the middle of the tracks going over a bridge or the entrance to a tunnel or overpass or pedestrian walk way. Maybe I am confused by the term you used? The track dept refers to all rails in the centre of the main rail as jordan rails.
@ngineered4u: Thanks for clarifying. Wikipedia has this description of gauntlet track: “Gauntlet track or interlaced track is an arrangement in which railway tracks run parallel on a single track bed and are interlaced such that only one pair of rails may be used at a time. Since this requires only slightly more width than a single track, all rails can be carried on the same crossties/sleepers.” Try Google for some images.
@Aitch….lol I did the google search before i replied to you So by definition the only true gauntlet tracks may be the ones up in Kitchener?
Waterloo ION LRT has Gauntlet tracks but for the opposite reason they are usually used – they break a single track into ‘two’ to avoid the platforms
gauntlet tracks were used to bring two tracks ‘into one’ over a bridge
funny enough Mile 9.9-10.33 of the Welland sub was gauntlet possibly right until the re-location project in the 70′s..???
