Caption: A train of brand new TTC H1 Subway cars crosses the Prince Edward Viaduct (aka the Bloor Viaduct) over the Don Valley, heading eastbound from Castle Frank to Broadview Station on the recently opened Bloor-Danforth subway line. Streetcars previously crossed at deck level, but when passenger volumes became too high, a new east-west subway line along Bloor Street and Danforth Avenue was built in the early-mid 1960's, opening in February 1966.

When the viaduct spanning the Don River was originally built for auto and streetcar traffic in the 1910's, it was built with an additional deck level below for a future rapid transit line. That deck went unused for five decades until the Bloor Danforth subway line was built in the 60's.

Visible below the bridge is the Don Valley Parkway under the right arch, along with CP's Don Branch (Belleville Sub) under the same span (running along the retaining wall, note the silver signal cabinet box trackside). The codeline poles in the foreground are for CN's Bala Sub, on the other side of the Don River.
