Caption: Six high-horsepower road units put their combined 18,600 horsepower to work pulling a rerouted CN #431 out of the Townline Tunnel on the climb out from underneath the Welland Canal. CN SD40-2W 5356, M636 2315, GP40's 9306, 9307, 9308 and GP40-2L(W) 9402 are typical of the mid-80's CN mainline power of the era, of which the widecab units faired best in terms of longevity.
The train is coming out of the tunnel on CN's Cayuga Sub near Brookfield, the other two tracks being CR's former Canada Division (CASO) line (sold to CN & CP two years earlier) and a middle shared track. The line through here, once a part of the busy New York Central corridor through Southern Ontario, today is a shadow of its former self in terms of trains and trackage.
