Crossing bells ringing herald CP SW1200RS 8139 arriving at Burlington West with a short local, coming off the CN Oakville Sub and heading down the east leg of the wye with a single tank car and steel offset-cupola van in tow. The short train is crossing over the Brant Street underpass, about to cross the Grays Lane crossing that provided access to the old CN station nearby.

For many decades dating back to the steam era, CP freight and passenger trains had running rights over part of the CN Oakville Sub from Union to Hamilton Junction (apparently to prevent CP from building their own parallel line from Union Station west). CP also ran their own local jobs to switch customers along the way. This whole special arrangement lasted into the mid-late 2000's, and today everything is handled by CN.

  1. This shot could have been taken by any of a couple of dozen of us that hung around Burlington West at one time or another. I get to wondering whose lens this came from.

  2. The tank car was for Hercules chemical company. There is another company that received rail service also but not sure if CP switched them also. Hercules is now switched usually on Sunday.

  3. See Steve Host’s post, they’re no longer using rail service as of the late June.
