Chessie paint scheme will always be a personal favourite…great shot
The Chessie Cat is a great scheme. I personally would have canned the guy who came up with that other one, though. )
neat image. hard to imagine a crossing there! i much prefer its dead-end status now – nice and quiet.
Arnold…I think there was leftover Battleship grey paint that got repurposed for the Blah Blah CSX scheme.. I agree…you can’t beat The Cat, especially through the Falls and definitely St Thomas
I wonder if I may offer an alternate location for this shot. Might this be the east end of Welland yard? With the track on the right being the remanence of the original line into Welland. I’d assume at this time it would’ve been the line into Vesuvius and maybe transfers to WH yard in Welland.
In this case, the crossing would make sense for Phillips road. In addition to the seemingly black signal bridges like the ones near the Welland Yard office.
I think you’re right Mark. The guardrails at left of the photo are akin to those at thr crossing on Phillips to this day.
This image is around mile 18 or so and Welland yard is about 21 or so.
Where I am standing is near what used to be a street over the track but was cut many years ago.
The track at the bottom right goes into a GIO yard I refer to as the one I cannot get to.
I fully thought this was mile 18 but I do think Mark is right as I’ve done some more digging since his comment.
I will offer a couple more points..
The pole behind 6852 and the wire that ends at that pole is the same setup as the pole/wire at that location on Phillips now visible on streetview.
Around mile 18, there is one signal bridge on the west side of Feeder Road and one signal bridge on the east side of Feeder road. Whereas this image shows two on one side of the crossing, so I think it has to rule out mile 18.
On satellite view at Phillips you can see the ROW for the track at right of this image curving off to the NE for Vesuvius, as Mark says. (i didn’t even really realize that ROW existed until now)
Would there not be a signal bridge closer Arnold? It was your shot at Feeder taken a month before this one that helped convince me this was near Phillips road:

I thought that was Feeder Rd in the pic, now deadended. Whatever. Hey, I’m allowed to screw up. )
Thanks guys.
Honestly Arnold, like I said, I thought it was too. Very easy to see this scene as the one at Feeder Road!
Not until Mark mentioned anything did I start to dig around. Learned a bit along the way too.
It also took me a few double takes to wonder about it! I’ve been wanting to see a shot of this seen for some time though, very neat to see!
I guess I will put this to the back of my noggin’ that next time down that way to check the area out and get my proper bearings. )
