Caption: When a broken rail just south of South Wellington derailed Wellcox-to-Victoria train No. 52 on Wednesday 1974-02-20, lead GP9 8531 got across with only its rear truck off, but GP9 8613 in second position was well and truly all off, and idling Baldwin 8005 rolled onto its left side, a major mess which ended its working life. Auxiliary crane 414326 from Victoria was kept busy, seen here on the initial hoist of 8613, with 8005’s trucks visible just beyond. This is just a couple miles south of the 1973-06-12 head-on collision which ended the careers of Baldwins 8006, 8007, 8008 and 8011.
