I believe this is the only time I witnessed GATX TankTrain cars moving over CP. This image was taken in downtown Niagara Falls as the train is on approach to Clifton Hill after just crossing into Canada. I believe the #8851 is returning with empties after running to Albany NY and am guessing ethanol. Perhaps someone can confirm. Why these tanks instead of the regular ones we would see? CP's Eastern Division spinoff St. Lawrence and Hudson 5542 leads CP 5673, 5669 and 5534 in this very late day shot. I understand sets of 8 cars can be unloaded from one as they are interconnected, but also wonder why this system is not as widespread as one would think. There must be drawbacks. Imaged with Mamiya 645E, 120 roll film, ISO 400 at 60th/sec, so you can see it was a slow mover.

  1. Great catch, Mr. Mooney! This was a great summer for detours on the Hamilton Sub… a quick look through my notes show they ran through much of July and August due to major flooding and damage/repairs on the D&H at Fort Kent, NY. I believe these trains handled crude oil between the Montreal area and Albany.
