Caption: Out front of the old Port Hawkesbury, Cape Breton, station sits CBNS 3008 and 5967 awaiting next assignments. The CBNS only operates as far as Port Tupper; just a few miles distant, these days as the line up to Sydney has not seen a train in 7 years now. The provincial government is paying $30,000 a month to have the line kept intact on the chance Sydney might in the near future open a container facility and the railroad would be once again brought to life. Currently the CBNS (Cape Breton and Central Nova Scotia) only operates from Port Tupper down to Truro, where it interchanges with CN. Since this photo was taken the CBNS has gone to new owner RailAmerica, and then to Genesee & Wyoming.

The proposed container facility is near Port Hawkesbury as far as I know and this is why CN has bought the line back …!

Will be interesting to see if they can get either off the ground – the CANSO straight port seems to have the most support so far
