The Canada Southern was definitely one of those Canadian railroads I wish I could have railfanned. Unfortunately I missed the last through trains over the line by mere months. I did manage to spend a lot of time along the line in its discontinued state, taking as many images as I could. Visits to places like Canfield, Waterford, Tillsonburg and of course St. Thomas still intrigued me, even if I didn’t even see a train. The abandonment signal system and removed second track created unique images. I enjoyed catching the few St.Thomas Central tourist trains with ETR steamer #9 in the lead heading to Shedden. Today most traces of the old CASO have been scraped clean off the roadbed and in many locations the roadbed itself is gone. I missed the removal of the east end of the CASO, but made sure I at least witnessed the removal of the west end once. This day I departed Mississauga under the cover of darkness, arriving at Comber by mid morning. I didn’t catch up with the rail removal train until South Woodslee. The train would take the entire day to remove just a few miles of track, but it was all worth it for the several memorable images I would capture. By 4pm it was time to head home and the last image found some of the train crew waiting for CP 6030 to meet them at the crossing as it lifted another section. The setting Sun highlighting the tree line in the distance and almost forgotten decomposing telephone poles along the old mainline. Farewell CASO!
