Not much of an 'artistic' photo at all, but rather a historical one. The view here is from the CP overhead bridge (CP Reynolds-CN Boyne) where the two transcontinental lines begin 'shared assets' northward. The truck, followed by front-end loader; is carrying ties .... this is the end of the old Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound Railroad line which extended from Ottawa to Depot Harbour.
As the fastest route to ship grain arriving by boat from Fort William, Depot Harbour and the west end of the OA&PS was once part of the busiest line in Canada. In time, things changed; and the CN which owned the line after 1923 wound it down; and very little activity took place out of Depot Harbour area after 1952 and beginning 1987 the line was pulled up by 1989.
A lot has been written on the OA&PS and the sudden death of Depot Harbour. Well worth researching. The old track bed on Parry Island from the Swing Bridge to the harbour is now utilized as Old Rail Line Rd. The swing bridge is featured in photo #33735 on this site.

  1. And I’d like to remind viewers of this WONDERFUL photo from Julian Bernard, who shared with us a photo of the line in service (!) in 1953 just before part of the line was abandoned severing the through route.

  2. Hmm, it looks like the “Mack” lettering on that Mack DM is backwards, suggesting this image is reversed. Usually the cab was offset to the other (drivers) side on those.

The wheel loader following looks like a Cat IT18 or IT28 Integrated Toolcarrier, the Brampton Caterpillar plant made a lot of those small loaders in the 80′s until they closed in 1991 (thanks NAFTA).

  3. You are correct Mr. Dan. Arnold emailed me the picture, I flipped it and sent it back to him.
He agreed that the picture was somehow reversed.
