Caption: It was mentioned that some of the old steam-era signal bridges in the Union Station Rail Corridor were due to be changed out by Metrolinx soon (late 2021). So here's some steam-era 1950's Toronto Terminals Railway action: Canadian National U3a "Northern" 6303 heads westbound under the signal bridge at Parliament Street subway/viaduct with a long freight in tow, on the approach to Toronto's Union Station downtown. Another signal bridge is visible in the distance at Cherry Street, by the namesake interlocking tower and Don Yard. The train will be diverting to the "High Line" at Scott Street interlocking tower and bypass Union's train shed and inbound tracks. Wooden ice reefers trail on the head end, possibly bound for the icing facilities at Mimico Yard. The round tank-like structure in the background is a gasometer at Consumers Gas Plant A (Parliament & Front), one of three of their coal gas facilities in Toronto.
CN 6303 was one of a handful of Grand Trunk Western 6300-series 4-8-4 Northerns sent north of the border to parent Canadian National (some sources indicate during WW2). Built by Alco at Scenectady NY in July 1927, 6303 would serve out her final years operating out of CN's Mimico Roundhouse alongside CN's own Northerns before being retired at the end of the steam era, and eventually scrapped in July 1961.
