Caption: Operating on a May 24th 1987 fantrip around town, chartered TTC PCC 4536 (an A8-class car built in 1951) poses in front of Toronto's downtown hockey shrine: Maple Leaf Gardens. At this time in the 80's, the remaining PCC fleet was on its way out (some like 4536 acquired large inelegant front numbers in their last years) but the TTC was in the early stages of a rebuild program for a handful of their A8 cars, the newest PCC cars in the fleet, for their future downtown Harbourfront route. 4536 would be one of the lucky cars rebuilt, emerging as 4607 in 1990 before the program was cancelled after 19 cars due to new vehicle accessibility requirements. The rebuilt PCC's mainly operated on the 604 Harbourfront route until they were retired and dispersed to other agencies, museums and owners in the mid-90's (4607 was sent to Phoenix AZ).

Streetcars have trundled along Carlton Street past Maple Leaf Gardens for decades, hauling hockey fans and other event-goers to the Gardens from 1931 until the venue officially closed in 1999 and the Toronto Maple Leafs moved to the new Air Canada Centre. The building was mothballed after, but in the late 2000's a joint partnership between Ryerson University and Loblaws was formed to renovate the old arena into a ground-floor Loblaws grocery store, and Ryerson's Mattamy Athletic Centre (featuring a hockey rink) built above it.
