Caption: Canadian National 3419 (an S1f-class 2-8-2 Mikado built by Alco for the Grand Trunk in 1913, and scrapped in 1957) heads up a fast-moving freight westbound on CN's Oakville Sub between Swansea and Mimico. The steamer has just ducked under the Queen Elizabeth Way overpass (note the old QEW curved light standards, and prominent monument in the median) and is passing by the new Christie Brown bakery at Lake Shore & Park Lawn. Spurs and sidings in the background run off the mainline along the north side of the property to serve roll-up doors into the building.
Known in CN timetables as Mimico East, the four Oakville Sub mainline tracks here emphasize the busy rail corridor full of freights, locals, tranfers and passenger trains heading to and from Union Station, Mimico Yard, Don Yard and Danforth Yard in an era before the decline of passenger service, and the future "Toronto Bypass" diverting much of CN's freight traffic north to MacMillan Yard. The closest track is a service track for the Ontario Food Terminal to the east of the QEW, and the other four are mainline tracks.
The large Christie Brown (Mr. Christie's) Lakeshore Bakery plant opened in 1950 and operated for decades before closing in 2013. The whole factory was eventually demolished for redevelopment, but the water tower was spared for historical purposes. The 1940's QEW Monument was moved to a nearby public park at the mouth of the Humber River due to a highway widening project in the mid-70's.
