Caption: TTC Peter Witt streetcars 2784, 2778, 2714 and 2748 sit in the yard at Russell Carhouse off Queen Street during a Thursday afternoon in May of 1962, awaiting their next call to duty for PM rush hour. Most appear to have come off morning Kingston Road streetcar runs, short-turning or going out of service at Connaught Avenue near the carhouse. One, 2748 parked on the far track of the yard, appears to have carried its last passenger as it's missing its front headlight and rollsigns.
Overshadowed by more modern PCC streetcars, by this time the old 1920's Peter Witt fleet was not long for this world. The elimination of the Dupont streetcar route that ran on Bay Street the following year (replaced by the new University subway line in February 1963) resulted in the remaining handful of cars being parked and seeing sparse use (often for extra runs, spares, fantrips, charters, etc) until the last one, 2766, was finally retired in June 1965. The TTC would retain and eventually overhaul 2766 for downtown Tour Tram service in the 1970's, and borrow or reacquire a few other cars to join it. Of the four pictured here, 2778 would be sent to Trolleyville in North Olmsted OH when the TTC was in the process of disposing of the last of its cars, and the others were likely sold for scrap.

Very nice indeed, Dan. Thanks from posting. The last (most westerly) track at Russell was usually reserved for wrecks, cars taken out of service, cars awaiting disposition. So 2748 would have made its last run in revenue service and was not long for this world. If we fast forward to a few years ago, this track was used for introducing TTC operators to new Flexities, and was a resting spot in between training runs. And today I believe this particular track is out of service. John
