Caption: During one of very few sunny patches of the day in the Greater Sudbury Area, OVR train 431 from North Bay knocks down a clear to stop signal at the Romford searchlights located at mile 72 of the CP Cartier Sub with an ex-CN GP40-2LW in the lead.
Romford is quite a significant junction, as the south track becomes the Parry Sound Sub down to Mactier and eventually Toronto, while the Cartier Sub on the north track runs to North Bay and continues into the now-abandoned Chalk River Sub toward Smith’s Falls and eventually Montreal. Nowadays, the OVR’s tri-weekly North Bay/Sudbury transfer is the only train to use the Cartier Sub between mile 0 & 62, as CP began to direct all of their Montreal traffic through Toronto around 2010 I believe. Much more history can be read up on this online, but that is a brief summary for you!
