Caption: During the 1990's CN was at a point where it needed to figure out what to do with its old straight SD40 fleet, either rebuild or retire. In the end a group of 29 units were rebuilt and classified as SD40U's. As for the rest they were gradually retired and most found an extended career elsewhere, many leased back to CN as part of Alstom's GCFX lease fleet. CN decided at the time it was more cost affective to look at the secondhand market for the rest of its SD40 needs, and purchased a group of former UP/MP SD40-2's to fill the void. This day CN SD40-2 5375, ex CN 6096, exx UP 4096, exxx MP 3096, nee Mo-Pac 796 is assisted by one of CN's SD40U's as they lead intermodal train 149 or 143 westward at Bayview.
