Caption: The last train to ever pause by the CN Palmerston station was unfortunately the CN rail train, seen here with its foreboding cars behind the town’s railway landmark. The stop was brief as the rail train was destined for the town of Harriston, which was located five miles north on the Owen Sound Subdivision.
Thankfully, a few months later in June, 1996, the town had presented an offer to CN to purchase the station and adjoining railway property. It was also in 1996 when local volunteers started to organize a group and the funds to replace the aging leaking roof of the structure. By 1998, Palmerston was finally able to fully purchase the 26-acre yard from CN.
Today, the station is home to the growing Palmerston Railway Heritage Museum, which has a decent collection of railway equipment as well as a detailed collection of local rail artifacts. This town has 100% done it right preserving their railway past and the museum is well worthy of a visit.
