For most of us in Ontario in the early 2000's CN's GMD1'S were a rarity, while some of the units have spent some time over their careers in eastern Canada most were prairie wanderers, roaming the network of grain branchlines in the Canadian prairies. The arrival of these two re-trucked and renumbered GMD1'S sent me on a search from Mississauga to Sarnia only to end up empty-handed. Luckily with time I was able to track the pair down. Both 1600 and 1601 spent the last year of their western lives lifting rail on the abandoned lightweight branchlines before trading trucks and being renumbered 1430 and 1431. Here the pair have given up hauling old 40' boxcars and hoppers of grain for a long cut of autoracks full of Ford vehicles. They are seen working the west end of Aldershot after traveling from Oakville yard, with fading autumn colours all around.

  1. These sure were elusive in the early 2000′s. I remember we went nuts when one showed up , anywhere, and didn’t last long. Ingersoll for example.

1430 in 2004 (July) and I went and got one shot. That’s it!

1422 showed up in 2006 at Ingersoll. Again, one shot, parked too!

They must have been around in any of the terminals but we didn’t have the network to know. Certainly cared…. but alas…

  2. They hung around Oakville a lot back then but most of my shots are parked ones too unfortunately.
