Caption: DIESEL'S DAYS ARE DONE. On the warm summer afternoon of August 7, 1988 Terra Transport NF210 # 914 waits outside the Victorian Era Station in St. John's for eventual disposal. This particular unit, one of 26 (909-934) built by GMD of London, ON in 1956 and delivered to forever banish the 2-8-2 Mikados and 4-6-2 Pacifics then operating on the narrow gauge railway. With a CN class of GR-12g, this 1200 hp roadswitcher had C-C 3'6" flexicoil trucks and a top speed of 60 mph. Originally delivered in the CNR's handsome green and gold paint scheme, it was repainted in the 1960's black and red noodle and would wear it to the very end, never to see the 1970's stripes or the 1980's Terra Transport bi-directional arrow. With only seven weeks until the last train, many of these units, including 914, would be scrapped but fortunately several of her sisters would be preserved throughout the Island while others were sold to South American and African railways.
