Caption: If I am correct the locomotive was perched by "Dunsmuir,Diggle,& CO and used in Wellington BC. It was originally built in 1883 as 30 inch gauge 0-6-0 and later converted to a 36 inch gauge 2-4-0 by disconnecting the first set of drive wheels which were left in place. The conversion was probably carried out in the Wellington shops prior to the WP&Y buying it in 1900. After arriving in the Yukon "The Duchess" spent her remaining years in the Carcross area. The paddle wheeler in the background is the "Tutshi" which was built by the British Navigation Co. in 1917, She was destroyed by fire in 1990. Today the area around "The Duchess" has been revamped and the remains of the "Tutshi" have been mostly left in place. The Dunsmuir era on Vancouver island is very interesting. For those unfamiliar with the location of Wellington it is located on the north side of Nanaimo BC. One thing I never did but I wanted to do was to find out many engine house's/roundhouses were built on Vancouver. Amazing what one little picture can teach you!
