Caption: It has been about 7 years since I posted a shot of CN 7724 rumbling down Welland Av in St. Catharines with one car in tow, heading for the GM Plant on Ontario St. ( photo #12027). Well, finally, found a "going" shot of same; and it does look pretty good.
Street running is a rare thing these days. This view is looking SW on Welland Av, just having crossed over Niagara St intersection. To me, this idyllic street scene appears a lot older than it is.

Arnold, great picture ! Thank you for photographing the unusual, and the “going away” shot certainly shows how the auto parts double-door box cars filled the street as confirmed by the on-coming motorist pulling half way into a parking spot – wouldn’t want to get “dinged” by the 7724. Hard to imagine 30 years earlier rumbling along the same street in NS&T 83, or 620 on board UCRS excursions . My guess those same houses and trees were there then – sure miss those days. Question, when did CN end service to the Ontario St GM plant, and when we’re the rails removed ? Thanks so much for posting, and like Oliver “ More please Sir, may I have more”, John
Thanks, John.
I will have to ask around regarding the end of service and the track removal and report back here.
Very interesting photo – the Chevette, flowers for less than $4, a broken air hose support on the boxcar; just some of the details that make this shot so interesting. Thanks for sharing Arnold.
I think 1994 or 1995 was the last year of them serving GM. Tracks were ripped up shortly after.
Thank You, Mr. Laces!!! I think you are very close to correct in your comment.
I hope, John, that is an acceptable answer.
That must have been a great treat riding the old NS&T.
I hope you have Andy Panko’s books on the subject.
