Roughly when did CN last use it?
I’m not sure about CN; they sold off their shares of the tunnel to CP when they privatized in favour of building a new tunnel in Sarnia in the early 90s although I think CN still used the tunnel here for a bit after that. The last movements through Windsor South were made by CSX when they still ran transfers over here from Detroit, and I think they stopped them in either 2012 or 2013. Miles Roach has a nice shot of one of these transfers from 2012. http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=33793
Neat, thanks for the info.
Folks–CN sold its half of the DRT to Borealis Transportation Infrastructure Trust (OMERS pension) in 2001–not at the time of privitization. See this link: https://www.freightwaves.com/news/cn-sells-interest-in-detroit-river-tunnel
Interestingly, work on the increased clearances between Windsor and Detroit completed before the Sarnia Tunnel was ready (due to problems with the “Excalibore” tunnel boring machine) and in the second half of 1994 into April 1995, CN detoured a lot of its auto traffic through Windsor. Sad sight now…
Nice lighting Mike.
Thanks Jason!
