BCOL 4614 leads one of two tracks of dead locomotives at the CN Southern Yard in Welland Ontario back in October 2020. This year CN has been purging a lot of its C40-8 fleet which includes CN C40-8M's, BCOL C40-8M's, CN C40-8's (ex CNW/UP), CN C40-8W's (ex ATSF/BNSF). As I type this today all units are on the former Martech property in Welland being scrapped by K&K Scrap.Recently CN 2415 has lead CN A402 and it's lack of number boards has caught many peoples attention...the running theory is it spent some time in a deadline and someone got the boards off the unit like the ones in my picture.

  1. neat view of this rather sombre scene, thankfully the only D8s retired as of now were nearly all in the same retirement block back from 2019-2020

  2. Sad. One of my favourite BCOL leader shots of mine had 4614 leading.

  3. 2415 hasn’t been in any deadlines in the last year. I just ran a history of it. This is probably partly due to the fact that it has been rebuilt before. I am getting very sick of heading out trackside to shoot a cool unit on the point and having it come around the corner with it’s numberboards missing. Please people – leave them alone until they’re retired for god sakes!!

  4. Joe, nice photo… one question, where did these locos go ?? It looks like they were moved out of Southern Yard at least 2 weeks back… are they in Port Rob ?

  5. Michael, they were moved into the old Martech property (former Stelpipe) to be cut up by K&K. Trillium moved about 19 a couple of weeks back over the course of four runs, using the old Stelco centrecab (615), and then moved five (that CN brought down to Southern Yard from Port Rob on Friday) yesterday around 1 pm. Three lines now at the old Martech property, and none of them are nose out if my calculations are correct – figures.

  6. Thanks James, I will check it out, appreciate it…Michael

  7. In other related news to Southern Yard and the old Martech building, the DWC pipe cars (a steadfast feature of Southern Yard) that Welded Tube uses are being moved in and out of the building, and the reporting marks changed from DWC to CLWX and the CN on each being painted over.

The JLCX unit is also inside getting work done, for anyone keeping tabs.

  8. Don’t know if 4617 was part of this group but I’m pretty sure it’s the last unit on A422 today. Didn’t get a solid view.
