Caption: There's a story behind every photograph, and the one behind this photo of mine never ceases to get a laugh out of me. I was at Newtonville Road with my buddy Cam, not expecting to see much but we stuck around for most of the day just in case. Cam looks at his phone, and reads a message from his friend in Cobourg saying there's an SD40-2 leader heading our way. The thing about this spot is getting from one bridge to the other, CN to CP and vice versa, requires a fair bit of walking (or running). We were camped out at the CN bridge, and against our better judgement we chose to wait there thinking this train was further away. Spoiler alert: it wasn't. Within five minutes Cam turns away and goes silent, then yells "Hey, I think I see it!". Of course, if Cam can see the train from here, it's already pretty close. We're both running at full speed to get to the other bridge in time. Not even halfway there and we hear it blow the horn for the Lancaster Road grade crossing, and only now do we realize how close it is and that we might not make it in time. Somehow, we managed to get there just before it crossed the tree line and we were able to snap a few photos before it passed us. This train came with Central Maine & Quebec 9011, an SD40-2F of CP heritage, trailing second. Throughout 2020, these engines made appearances all over Ontario. As the former CMQ track was being upgraded to CP standards, ballast trains were regularly going back and forth between there and Sudbury. This is one of those trains, swelled with several other freight cars and MOW equipment it picked up in Smiths Falls. Having missed out on seeing these locomotives pull mainline trains ten or more years ago, it was nice getting this chance to capture them in action.
