Caption: From the Collection (my attic), we have WABASH 657 travelling westbound through Dain City. The train would have just crossed the diamond with the former Welland Railway (North - South) at Welland Junction, a hamlet that is roughly halfway between Welland and Port Colborne. Since the Canal re-alignment (circa 1970) Dain City is now in the municipal boundaries of the City of Welland. In the background on the left is the Dain City Tavern, a former local watering hole for the JOHN DEERE gang (factory closed in 2010 and completely levelled now). Could a version of the famous country song THE WABASH CANNONBALL, popularised by both Canadian Hank Snow and the slightly more famous American Johnny Cash be playing as she thunders over the Welland Canal ? The lift bridge was actively raised and lowered until December 1972 at which time Canal ship traffic was switched to the new Welland By-pass (also called the 5th Welland Canal). Doug Page has an excellent colour shot of WABASH 657 at Canfield Jct. The now fixed-Bridge is still used by Trillium for servicing customers in the area and access to their main north-south line.
