For the crew that works this run 6 days a week, they are headed home this Saturday morning at 10:30. They will enjoy a Sunday off and be back Monday morning with 836, the jet fuel train. Not a large train today, 32 loads and 3 empty gons. Their work week looked like this, Monday 836-jet fuel loads, Tuesday return home with empties. Wednesday 584-grain peddling, Thursday return home. Friday 584-grain peddling, Saturday return home. Sunday off. On their return home days, on average, they would have most of the afternoon off. Also, the caboose 79836 was stamped with "Assigned to 584" on the side. For the years I was trackside, this run was a favourite of the men with high seniority. You're not going to stack up the miles real fast but it was predictable with some time off during the week. And really, except for the odd work train in the summer, you had the subdivision pretty much to yourself. Shucks. :-)
