  1. Excellent photographs Andy. Thanks for posting. I’ve shot extensively in this area back in the 90′s and I don’t recognize this tunnel being at this location. I’m wondering if in 1947 there wasn’t a second tunnel put in at this location for westbounds, as seen in my posted photo here, photo ID 39955 or if your tunnel might be the one located at Yale which is the next stop north of Hope. Best regards and please keep posting. – Joe

  2. There are two tunnels. The one we see here is the original construction. When they double tracked from Vancouver to Ruby Creek around 1913 they built another longer tunnel closer to the mountain for westbounds. The newer tunnel has a stone portal at east end that gets the early morning sun only near the longest day of the year.

The highway 7 eastbound at this area goes down an extremely steep hill, then levels out on the flat valley floor as you approach Aggasiz.

  3. Thanks for that info and yes, I’m very familiar with the area, but wasn’t aware of the history. That large amount of broken rock to the right of the image was gone by the time I ever got there, so the landscape has changed over time … but I did recognize the cliff face over the east portals from a shot I took on that side. Thanks again for the history lesson, and I’ll look forward to seeing more of your Dads/Uncles photos. Regards – Joe

  4. A great deal of faith in a 1″ flange in that photo!
