(Port Colborne Harbour Railway became Trillium a few years after its conception)
Although the official Opening Festivities did not take place until July 2, 1997; the PCHR was out and about by the latter part of June.
In this image, former NY&LE 6101 did its best to show us what it was, an ALCO, as the C-425 throttled up pulling away from the Robin Hood Mill area on its way to Casco and the WH yard, just a few miles down the line.

The PCHR started off as a 7.7 mile line connecting Welland and Port Colborne. It was operated by the Caledonia and Hamilton Southern Railway, Ltd. (I'm wondering what ever became of that outfit)
The much traveled NY&LE #6101 came to the PCHR as their sole locomotive, as the "C&HSR" was affiliated with the New York & Lake Erie. In 1991 the 6101 was returned to the NY&LE and then ended up on the Delaware-Lackawanna in Scranton, PA in 2007; where it still resides today. Doubt it has quit smoking.

  1. I thought about posting a Trillium shot in Port Colborne today but after seeing this I’m glad I didn’t – it would’ve paled in comparison! Great shot Arnold.

  2. Very funny. Its night and day compared to then and now. But I am glad you like this one. :o )

  3. That is a beauty, and thanks for the background on the C&HSR which is new for me

  4. And after all this time it has been brought to my attention a rather obvious error. The 6101 was returned to the NYLE in 2001, not 1991 as in the caption !!!!

  5. Arnold the “Caledonia and Hamilton Southern” was likely the parent company of Trillium all this time. Now, given the re-organization into GIO Rail maybe it no longer exists, maybe it was re-named who knows? It’s not mentioned much anymore these days and information is hard to come by.
