End of the line: The OBRY is now slated to end operations on December 31 2021.. Get your shots! However, here's some really uniue stuff that happened on the line. What's even more interesting is it was only about 4 of us chasing this.. don't know how..
With a dome car on the Owen Sound subdivision hauled by CP, you'd almost think we're staring at some kind of alternate reality on the Owen Sound sub, where passenger services were never discontinued and wild success of business allowed it to continue into the 2000's with dome cars. But this image was made possible by circumstance. The OBRY/CANDO had (and may still have) an agreement that when they had engine trouble, CP would supply a unit temporarily. This happened a few times but rarely did it make it onto a passenger train. In 2014 it happened, twice: First as seen here with 8249, but since 8249 blew up good not long after, CP ended up supplying brand new 2267, with barely 1000 miles on the odometer, which ran on the next week's Snow Train. But it gets better, the Dome car was also not supposed to be on the train that day, only because the train lines were frozen did they have to take it with them! Double circumstance made for really unique photography opportunities that I had no idea I was getting into , other than the CP unit. What fun. CANDO continued to operate the Explorer for 4 more years.

  1. The last two coaches in this four car train (including the dome car) along with 4009 were not scheduled to be taken on the run.

The dome car didn’t seem to last very long in service.

  2. Is there a chance someone else takes up this line to continue it? It seems like there are a decent amount of industries in the Streetsville-Brampton area that would be severely affected by a total line shutdown.

  3. Highly highly unlikely.

The traffic on the line has never made it profitable. Carloads are 500 a year or less right now. They could all transload from Guelph GJR and it would amount to a rounding error in traffic by comparison.

Someone may buy it but the real estate is the prize now

Only the passenger train had potential to help it break even..

  4. That is interesting.

  5. Maybe Metrolinx should look into purchasing it at least to Snelgrove since it runs right through the heart of Brampton and then connect with CP at Streetsville.

  6. I think it would be a very smart idea.
