Caption: The drafty old insulbrick CPR station is gone now. Too bad. Around this structure it was unbelievably busy back in the days of the depression as men wandered the country looking for work. Quite a few police employed here to keep the peace. One must remember there were no highways thru this area back in the 1930s, and the only way was by train, and at the time Nipigon was a community in the middle of nowhere. A stop-off point.
The station was built in 1929, no doubt replacing an older one. The building ended up outliving its' usefulness, and for other purposes was just too costly to maintain. CP wanted it moved or gone, the town tried to find some use for it, but it all amounted to just too much expense to justify saving, and it came down in late 1982. For the purpose of the transcontinental passengers that still passed thru here, a small shelter was installed.
