Caption: A westbound Amtrak train on the Oakville Subdivision in the evening....it apparently happened once a week for a brief time. Here the short-lived Amtrak "Niagara Rainbow" is seen approaching the Plains Road bridge and Bayview Junction with dead-heading VIA Rail equipment with Amtrak 265 leading to New York. According to a Canadian Rail magazine article from 1996 that has a great detailed history of Amtrak operations in Canada, this train was named as a throwback to the original "Niagara Rainbow" that operated from New York to Detroit via St. Thomas. The 1994 version ran on an overnight schedule from New York City to Toronto northbound. Train 65 departed New York on Fridays only, while southbound 62 departed from Toronto only on Sundays as seen here.
According to the article written by Fred F. Angus, the trains were to have started operations on May 1 1994 and run twice weekly in both directions. However they were delayed until June 1994 and only operated once weekly. Reportedly, this was the only Amtrak service into Canada that did not run on a daily schedule. On September 10, 1995 the "Niagara Rainbow" train service would be discontinued and fade quietly into history once again.
