After setting off a pair of cylindrical hoppers, a single pick is made.  The 1911 built Maple Leaf Mill is on the left, and Government Elevator (Port Colborne Grain Terminal) is on the right.  The facility has been managed by Goderich Elevators for at least 30 years.  Originally built to replace the original Grand Trunk Elevator (1856), it was designed to "lighten" ship loads so they could transit the shallower draft 3rd Welland Canal.  When the canal was deepened in 1932 the need to trans-ship before Canal transit was gone, but the shear size of the 4,000,000 bushel facility ensured its future to this day.

  2. In 1919 there was a massive dust explosion at the facility that was felt as far away as Hamilton. The facility was severely damaged and twelve men perished. The fatalities would have been much higher but the explosion happened over lunch when many men were out…
