Caption: Once the clouds broke on Saturday I headed out to see what I could find. Ultimately, I was heading for Fort Erie, but figured I'd give Hamilton a once over before leaving town. First spot to check is always Stuart as its between me and the industrial railroading, and it's a quick way to account for CN's power. I noticed one set was missing so "down the hole" I went. Soon after getting into the industrial area I heard 60 axles hit the detector at mile 42 of the Grimsby Sub and figured the yard job was going to the steel centre. Sure enough, I met up with them at Parkdale where they made a quick 13 car set off, then it was up the New Gages Spur light power to head to the hole. This is a spot I'd wanted to catch a train at for a while (just hadn't gotten around to it yet), for its storied connection to the ore trains of years past. The 1600 Yard Job (which works Strathearne Yard and Eastport area industries) is a decent bet to take this spur to access the hole, doing so from time-to-time.
This area is known as Gate 13, and on the other side of the locomotives is the access road to Dofasco Central Shipping. Central Shipping has a fair sized yard itself, but it currently doesn't see any use. I can't find any shots from that yard to link to, but Steve discusses Central Shipping a bit in the caption here.
