Winter not far off as a trio of CN SD40s leads a train from Fort Erie northward (read: west) to Port Robinson and beyond. Power is CN 5035, 5040 and 5xxx. The Netherby diamond was removed in the '90s; the line now is only the Welland Tube Spur off a connection a tenth of a mile or so behind me in this pic, running to the right over Hwy 140. Traffic from Martech and the Welland Tube plant is fairly frequent, interchanging with CN Southern Yard. The section removed ran east to CP Brookfield.

  1. This one is a gem, Arnold.

  2. Hmmm, can’t count how many times i have crossed that diamond. Great pic AW.

  3. Thanks, Gents. Something different.

  4. Amazing shot Arnold! Just curious, this would’ve been long after the Seaway realignment, wondering if the diamond was still in place to allow CP access to what is now Martech and Welland Tube and Pipe?

  5. I believe you are exactly right, Mark.

  6. Hi Mark and Arnold, I have a shot of CP1618 on CP line that serviced Welland Pipe, taken around 1986, I believe the line existed until mid-90′s (maybe)…

  7. Excellent image Arnold. Of course, the weather man speaks again: Was this taken during the initial effects of a snowstorm?

  8. Gang that diamond was still in place in early 2000′s.cp side of Spur was removed not long after my first ventures into niagara.

  9. Trillium now switches Marteck and Welland tube and does CN Southern yard interchange with GMTX 340 MP15AC

  10. Thanks. Something I have yet to see.

  11. The area where GMTX is kept also has the old Stelco 80 tonner and an IC SW14 and a CN GP9 stored viewable thru the fence!

  12. The IC and CN unit are owned by K&K and are reportedly available for re-sale (unless they decide to scrap them with the Dash 8′s).

  13. Great scene Arnold. Neat to see a shot with the diamond still in place.

@NiagaraMike11: isn’t S13 108 assigned to Martech and Welland Tube? I thought GMTX 340 was off lease.

  14. I thought this diamond was removed in 2003 or so. I could be wrong.. I was very new then and I had made a couple trips down there but knew nothing.

Jacob 108 was assigned to Welland Tubes in 2022, in 2021 it was the GMTX unit.
