After several years in Mac (as far as I know at least), 1408 is back in service and has been working the Hamilton yard jobs for about a week or so. It was leading long hood forward on the east end of the triple set upon first arriving, but a GP9 on the west end of the double set wouldn’t load two days ago causing a shuffle in the power and now 1408 is short hood forward on the west end of the 1400 set, which made a rare appearance at Stelco today – a switch usually handled on weekdays by the 0600. Since CN’s return to Hamilton’s industrial area in December 2018, there has been a fair bit of GMD-1 action in addition to 1408, including 1412, 1437, 1439, and 1444. These are all of the five current GMD-1s on CN in Ontario.

  1. Great shot, Jamie!

  2. I’m glad they kept sending the GMD-1′s to Hamilton. Before 1408, there was a week or two without a GMD-1 here. Was basically the first time without at least 1 GMD-1 in Hamilton since the CN takeover if I’m not mistaken. Then CN resurrected 1408 and problem solved! Very nice shot James, we both know how illusive the GMD-1′s in Stelco can be!

  3. Thanks guys.

Mark the first one to show up was 1444 in April of last year.

  4. Really sweet shot Jamie.

Neat the Hammer got the Quinfecta of CN GMD1′s!

  5. Excellent Jamie! Was that in the evening…looks like sweet eve light.

  6. Thanks Jason and Kevin.

Kevin, this was right around 6pm. If you check on suncalc you will see the sun is pretty much straight down the pipe on this track at that time of day right now, as reflected in the shot. So not ideal conditions in that respect but hard to complain too because on a side note, it took me about a year to get a GMD-1 in Stelco in sunlight – not that I am constantly trying for it or anything; just something I was hoping to eventually get. Despite living in Hamilton I am probably only out railfanning here in daylight 2 or 3 times a month (and nights shots maybe about the same). I probably spend more time railfanning in daylight in Niagara than I do here.
