Driving up the hill toward Stuart Street seeing the GMD1 in lead working Hamilton was something you need to stop for even with the -20 degree lake winds just completely taking over your body. They headed to the west end of the yard to spot some tank cars on a cut that needed to be lifted, came back to the east end here at Stuart street then headed back into the yard. 10 minutes passed and they still don’t pull up to a point where it’s shootable and was making me confused as I didn’t want to wait in this cold much longer as I couldn’t feel my upper body. Just then they pull a cut of cars out of the yard and start to proceed to the main track for headroom when VIA 97 the VIA operated inner Canada Amtrak train flies around the corner pacing this yard job’s train as it pulls out. Will they be side by side? No, unfortunately 1437’s nose ducked under the bridge before the Maple Leaf got closer into the main frame of the shot but what do ya do. Still a cool scene to see Canada only operated GMD1’s with Amtrak equipment in the background. With the perfect sun light to, the last thing I’d do is complain.

  1. Still a good picture.

  2. Looks like a good shot to me. Just be happy that you are not the crew member riding the point of 1437. I remember those days in brutal cold. Not fun

  3. Liam, this picture is certainly worth freezing half-to-death. Not only a very interesting contrast in motive power, but also two different railways. In addition, a great view of CN Stuart track arrangement, CN’s Harbour Front yard, and in the distance the bulk unloading tracks on the left. Now, when are Amtrak/VIA going to smarten up and use the eb diverging track at
Stuart into West Harbour and pick up passengers ? But I guess the track from the east end of the GO Station has to be tied into Grimsby Sub, or has this been done.

  4. @railwayguy. The plan is to have the track run into West Harbour station so it will also be a stop for VIA/Amtrak. The track is in place but not yet attached to the Grimbsy Sub

  5. @ngineered4u Interesting how the equipment has been there forever it seems like but no progress is being made

  6. @Liam..that is the way the railways seems to work..lol or not work sometimes. I have seen it take over 10 years to finish certain projects.
