Caption: The past for this former Salem & Hillsborough Railroad seems about as dreary as the weather on the day when I paid this place a visit. Thru the miserable cold, wind and rain we can see the former tourist train office, a few static cars and the newly built engine house in behind.
This tourist road once was home to a handful of locomotives and was fairly active. But in 1994 a disastrous fire, due to arson, destroyed or badly damaged most of the equipment and brought the old S&H to its knees. Volunteer staffers were deflated and the operation became dormant.
There has been no public train rides since 2004.
However, in 2005 the operation was reborn as the New Brunswick Railroad museum, operated by the New Brunswick division of the CRHA. Well worth the visit.
