Caption: My favorite engine in Sudbury has seen better days but not the end of days just yet, future engine test bed 5391 enjoys the evening sun ahead of parts source DESX 5308 (was CN) while CN 7232 awaits it's turn inside the newly constructed shop to my right. Diesel Electric recently finished this new building and tracks in the foreground this year and has very been busy servicing just about everything CN from SD75i's, to orange DMIR tunnel motors, to WC SW1500's!
Built in 1978 for CP as #5782, it was one of 2 groups of engines (CP 5779-5789 and 5860-5864) purchased by Ontario Hydro to power their unit coal trains from BC/SK to Thunder Bay, ON. Sometime around 1995 Ontario Hydro let the contract expire and the remaining engines were reassigned between CN and CP, this one becoming CN 5391 in May of 1996 and being the only one CN held onto after selling the others back to CP in 2000. CN 5391 was retired April 2008, sold to NRE Capreol and eventually dealt to DESX in Sudbury sometime in 2008, and for the last decade has been moved around this scrap yard just off the CN Sudbury spur providing parts to other DESX rebuilds.
To compare, here's how it looked shortly after retirement/arriving at DESX in 2008: http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=8832
Another look from 2010, quite a few obvious parts missing since then! http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=6869
I'd like to thank Wilco van Schoonhoven for all this information from his excellent website http://www.mountainrailway.com , I haven't been able to find any other website with as much detail on this Hydro deal or most other engines that catch my interest as his, much appreciated Wilco thank you!
