On the south shore of Kempenfelt Bay beside Barrie, CN had Allandale station, yard, and roundhouse which served trains on the Newmarket Sub and other lines that junctioned at Barrie, or branched from CN tracks in the area.
Toward the end of the 1950's as diesels took over, quite a lot of CN steam engines were stored here, lingering into the 1960's.
I remember seeing engines like these as we passed north through Barrie heading to summer vacation spots - I wanted to get closer, but it never happened. After several summers they were all gone, to scrap I presume.
In this image we have 2-8-2 engine CN 3391 with 4-8-4 CN 6174 behind it. "Old Smokey" is chalked on the tender ahead of 3391.
The connecting rods and valve gear eccentric rods have been removed for towing, placed (as usual) on the running board above the cylinders. 3391 no longer has a headlight or illuminated number boards.
Image source is a 120/620 film negative. Location mapped is approximate.

  1. CN 3391 was CN class S-1-e, built by CLC for Canadian Government Railways about 1920.
CN 6174 was CN class U-2-e, built by MLW for CNR in 1940. Similar U-2-e 6167 has been at Guelph station since about 1967 – apparently it must be removed before the end of 2020.

  2. Allandale was used as a staging point for locomotives headed to Stratford for scrapping.

  3. It seems the steam engines I saw driving past Allandale were different from year to year.
A search turned up CNRHA’s web page of Central Region Steam Locomotive Assignments, as of August 1957:
CNR 3391 assigned to Capreol, in the active list. (Another ref says scrapped 6/61)
CNR 6174 at Sarnia, stored serviceable. (Another ref says scrapped 11/61)
Scrappings listed for August 1957 were at London.

  4. I hace the number plate off 3391. Purchased it at Georges Trains, Toronto in the 1970′s

  5. out of curiosity, what did you pay for it then?
