Just before 9am on a bright and sunny morning of August 1 finds a typical CN manifest traveling the Halton with et44ac 3068 leading. Train is heading eastward just outside of Malton and are slowly down actually as they are rather close to their finishing point at MacMillan Yard. Sadly I couldn’t quite get this train’s ID (anyone who may know is more than welcome to mention it in a comment) but they are passing by the location of what used to be the CN Malport Yard where CN would store freight as well as L559’s power for the customers on this portion of the Halton but it appears that as of 2019, all Brampton locals now start and finish at MacMillan Yard in Vaughn and by the looks of this scene, Malport Yard seems to have been completely demolished and is being rebuilt as a container loading/unloading facility as a small add-on for Brampton’s bustling Intermodel Yard known as BIT which branches off a few hundred yard east of where I was standing. Photo was taken on top of Airport road and if you look towards the bottom, you can see one of the track workers giving this crew a friendly wave.

  1. Nice view.

  2. Great shot. Malport used to a be very busy place is the 80′s. Road switchers serving the Halton,Weston Subs including 547 to Milton were based out of this yard. CN’s original Roadrailer trains to Montreal via the Weston Sub also started out of Malport before being moved to Mac Yard after BIT was closed. Its nice to see action there again as most times once a facility is closed (especially on the railroad) it rarely ever reopens. The only down side for anyone unlucky enough to live anywhere near BIT or Malport is the incredible amount of truck traffic on all roads in and around these yards. Its a nightmare if you need to be in the area.

  3. Thanks guys!
@ngineered4u wow thanks for the info! Looking on my google maps it sure did look like it was rail city at one point in the industrial sections of Brampton! Wonder how many locals it took to service all of them back in the day! I’d sure as hell love to some day see some photos of CN local service in Brampton from the 80s that’s a fact!
And when you said BIT closed, did you actually mean opened? Or was that a regular rail yard too at one point?

  4. @Railfan99… sorry , that was a typo. I meant after Malport originally closed. Malport was also used to repair intermodal repairs for BIT. Mostly TTX well cars. I will check my old photographs to see if i have anything from the Brampton area.

  5. Great work Graydon – really neat photo. I’m curious if this is a logical extension of BIT, or if CN is just finding a way around the bureaucratic intransigence over at the planned Milton container terminal?

  6. @cn5248. I am not sure if its a logical extension of BIT. More like BIT has been at capacity for ages. They can’t expand anymore, so rather than use Malport the logical thing to do was to use Malport as another addition. CN’s hottest train 101 is partially built there. As for Milton..I am not sure what the status is? When I left CN in 2017 , i had seen the full plans for the yard. Its not huge at all, just a couple tracks and support buildings. Despite the NIMBY protest, if CN wants it built, it will happen.

  7. Nice capture! One other notable thing out of view to the right was the site of the old MTO John Rhodes Centre, the DriveTest centre for Brampton until it moved elsewhere in the mid-2000′s. It was sort of a small self-contained set of roads where you took your driving tests, even including a level crossing with crossbucks (no lights/gates). All redeveloped a number of years back.

  8. Thank you Peter for your comment and thank you Dan for the excess info about the drive test facility. Quite interesting indeed!
And thank you ngineered4u for willing to check and see if you have any photos! Just a curious thought, have you ever worked on the locals in this area?

  9. @Railfan99.
    You are most welcome.
I have worked many of the local jobs out of Malport when it was an active freight yard in the 80′s. Before operations moved the way freights to Mac Yrd, I worked all the industrial jobs and leads including the old AMC motors plant off the south industrial spur, 547 road switcher to Milton and the Eco Rail train that ran from Malport to Montreal via the Weston Sub.

  10. Really nice Graydon, especially with the human element in there.
