On a quiet fall day in 2017 I took the time to photograph the Credit Valley Explorer as it trundled through the picturesque Caledon valley with the farms in the background. Fall was trying hard to come through but the unusually warm fall kept the leaves mostly green. Caledon is a really nice place, too bad the property values are through the roof.

In 2016 I shot CCGX 4014 a year later I finally got the +1 off my list (CCGX 4015).

  1. Now that brings back some good memories. A quick check of my Timebook confirms that is indeed my hi-vis vest. Nice shot Steve.

  2. Oh yeah, we had a chat at Inglewood not long after. :)

  3. “A” for Affort……oops, I mean “Effort”.

  4. A really nice shot Host! Now have you or anyone else on here heard much this year about passenger service returning to this line? Bet they’ll sure make some good profit, especially in the fall!

  5. Ahh Graydon. I know you are young and quite naive to how the business world works, but profitability is never a guarantee my friend, and it’s a lot of money to ‘begin’ passenger service on any line. Let’s assume $500,000 to get service ‘started’ That’s 8333 tickets at $60 each to break even (no profit at all) 52 trips with 2 coaches fully sold out (160 tickets, 80 per coach) and my costs are the costs for two fully working, qualified coaches in 100% mechanical tip top shape plus operating costs for the year paid to operator (gas, crews, management, catering, profit, insurance).

Someone has to own equipment and/or purchase it and want to take this chance… (Finding 2 operable coaches? good luck!)

The Mayor of Orangeville won’t spend a dime on it – so unless someone who sees a big opportunity comes into the fray.. and enters a contract.. and willing to take the chance..

Passenger service nonwithstanding – I’ll be surprised if this line is still in service in 2 years. Or less. Sad to say, but that’s just me. I have my memories..

  6. Yeah, that liability insurance has got to be a stinker.

  7. Not 2 days later after I posted my shot and opinion on the matter this happened:

  8. Very interesting indeed! And I yet just read the next article from this weekend. Guess I better take advantage while the window is still open and grab my shots..

Just of curiosity Steve, how much would you be willing to bet that by this time in 2021, the line will be ‘a thing of the past’? Or what percent are you that that’ll be the case.

And one last thing with regards to this topic, do you know much of what took place with regards to Collingwood eventually selling their portion of the Medford Sub? I remember the mayor mentioning that they too were of the fence about it for a while (not necessarily like the Orangeville Mayor who just wants the line gone) and it just didn’t make sense for them to continue paying all the land taxes for essentially one customer so after a while, they made the decision but I was just curious in general of what took place with them in the months leading up to July 14 2011 (the day the line saw its last train). If you or anyone else knew much about

  9. 50/50, but I’m on the “it won’t survive” side of 50. It depends if there is an interested buyer. Maybe the shippers may band together and buy it. We just don’t know at this time.

In a few months time.. we’ll know much more.

The Collingwood questions are history… it’s all happened, should be online..

    - Steve
