Caption: CP S3 6538 is shown parked in Guelph near the old stone freight building in April 1981. By this point in time, CP was phasing out its old Alco/MLW switchers (many dating back to the steam era), and the final ones would be retired in the mid-80's. CP 6538 was retired in 1985, and one of the last units on the roster still in the maroon and grey "block" livery (having never been repainted in action red paint).
A few notable features about this unit are the handrails touched up with modern action red and black paint, the watchman's heater (for keeping the engine warm when shut down at branchline outposts), front numberboard, 3-chime horn, exhaust spark arrestor and air vents cut into the front cab roof.
