CN rented a number of EMDX units in this timeframe. EMDX 794 is probably ex-CR 7994, previously PC 7994. EMDX sold off their ex-CR GP38-2′s to various companies; some are currently owned by GATX (GMTX) so it’s possible some are back on CN. Just hearsay, but I read that EMD entered the 2nd-hand locomotive rental business because Conrail balked at paying EMD’s buyout price for their fleet of ex-PC GP38-2′s when its lease ended. Nice shot! Weird to see stacks in Aldershot – perhaps the train was detouring around track work on the main?

My understanding was that EMD surprised CR by not allowing them to renew their lease, as EMD was interested in establishing a lease fleet. This caught CR off-guard, who then was forced to re-activate long-stored GP30′s and GP35′s to fill the power gap. Either way, I agree, CR was not pleased!

Thank you smithgl for your comment and info. I didn’t take this picture, so what’s happening is guesswork. I’ve spent many hours in this area since 1997, and seen many changes. Maybe 15+ years ago I clearly recall seeing on multiple occasions a weekend (Sunday?) morning-to-midday westbound train that passed through Aldershot yard with head-end wellcars carrying containers and mixed freight behind. It dropped & lifted cars (other than well cars) before continuing west. That is where my ‘probably’ came from.
