Caption: Scona midnight job puttering back to the yard at 7:45. Another set of interesting units. The 9601 is your standard, lightweight frame, CN GP40-2L, in series 9400 to 9632. This is evident by the noticeable jog in frame height between the 2 units. The lighter frame allowing more sand and fuel. CN 9633 to 9667 and a handful of GO GP40-2's were built with standard frames, with the resulting decrease in fuel and sand. These units are GP40-2's with no L. All this frame info is according to Greg McDonnell's field guide. When checking roster sites on the web, many lump them all into the L designation. Now onto the 9671, which is a former GO unit and its GO number I am not sure of. It has the standard frame, which creates the jog as mentioned above. My curiosity is, does it still have 76mph gearing, the CNRHA lists it as such. Can't see it happening in yard service. The 9671 has the distinction of having pulled the American Orient Express across Canada twice.

Amazingly, Athearn has the L designation right on their models.
