Caption: It's springtime in Southern Ontario, and thoughts turn to .... Maintenance of Way, among other things.
A train of loaded Herzog side-discharge ballast cars, each with solar panels, was observed in Aldershot yard between 9AM and 3PM (when I departed), perhaps waiting for a quiet time to spread ballast.
Leading the west-facing train are two ES44dc units and a Dash 9-44CW
My source indicated that the solar panels charge batteries that power communication equipment and discharge doors. Ballast dropping with these trains is normally remotely controlled, with the important capability of stopping discharge at grade crossings and switches.
Example Herzog car numbers - first hopper in red & white HZGX 10162 and a brown hopper HZGX 8427
